But the DSM IV only classifies Sexual Sadism, Sexual Masochism, Fetishes, and Paraphilias as mental disorders if they cause "marked distress and interpersonal difficulty" or "clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas..." The unfortunate thing is that this fact hasn't gotten across to many people who work in the field. Nor have many psychiatry/psychology textbooks been updated to include this. The persisting mindset is what we still have to fight against. As well as the laws that invade personal privacy, for those of us who are not pros.
